When Do You Finally Replace Your Water Heater?

/ / Water Heaters

They’re something we here on the Northshore and Metro New Orleans often take for granted, until they suddenly go out.

Our water heaters.

Those of us who love long, hot showers are often suddenly jolted to an unwelcome reality when our hot water heaters go out and we’re left with nothing more than frigid water all throughout the house.

No thank you, right?

Hot Water

If you’ve been wondering how much life your hot water heater has left, you’ve come to the right place.

In addition to providing heating and air conditioning services throughout St. Tammany Parish, Slidell, Covington, Metro New Orleans and Metairie, we also repair existing hot water heaters and install new ones.

And we’re here to give you the inside information on everything you need to know about your home’s hot water heating system, and when it may be time for a replacement or even an upgrade.

So, How Long Do How Water Heaters Last?

In order to predict the life expectancy of your home’s hot water heater, you need to know what type of system you have in your house.

In general, there are two basic types of hot water heaters;

  • Traditional or conventional hot water heaters, which operate by using natural gas to fill a single tank full of hot water.
  • Tankless Water Heaters, which are more modern and environmentally-friendly models that work by providing heated water on demand, wherever and whenever you desire it.

If you have a traditional or conventional hot water heater in your Northshore or Metro New Orleans home, you can expect it to last around 10 years or so.

However, if you’ve upgraded to a tankless water heating system, it can last as long as 20 years!

Don’t Forget the Importance of Annual Maintenance

Whichever type of water heater you have in your Southeastern Louisiana home, you need to properly maintain it every year so that you get the most life out of it as possible.

That means you need a reliable hot water heater installer and servicer – like us – to perform regular maintenance on your system.

For a conventional water heater, this may mean annual maintenance to prevent water drips and such.

If you have a tankless water heater, it’ll need to be descaled once a year.

Remember, skipping out on regular maintenance isn’t a good idea. Not only can foregoing maintenance shorten the life of your water heater, but it can also cause larger problems in your home that could have easily been prevented had you just called us for regular service updates.

Don’t Wait to Replace Your Hot Water Heater Until the Moment You’re Left in the Cold

There’s nothing like waking up late for work, hitting the shower, and discovering that all your hot water is gone.

Oh, and it always seems to happen in winter, too, right?

By regularly maintaining your hot water heater, we’re able to keep tabs on the expected number of years your system has left and suggest replacements before the heater goes out, so you and your family are never left out in the cold.
